Rabuka’s Call to Address COC Delays Sparks Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has encouraged Independent Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj to formally contact the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) about the challenges he faces regarding his appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This suggestion comes as a response to Maharaj’s criticisms of the COC for delays in appointing a new Chairperson for the Electoral Commission, a position that has remained vacant since Barbara Malimali’s resignation last September.

In discussions with FijiLive, Rabuka noted that the COC comprises representatives from the Opposition, including Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu, who could assist Maharaj in addressing his concerns. He emphasized that two distinct issues are at hand: the ongoing operations of the COC and Maharaj’s ongoing appeal, which is being processed by the Fijian Elections Office.

Maharaj has labeled the COC’s lack of action as “slack,” highlighting their awareness of the established appeal process while failing to appoint a new commissioner. His appeal follows a complaint from former FijiFirst member Mosese Bulitavu, who alleged that the party violated its constitutional provisions.

The next hearing for this appeal is scheduled for August 15, intensifying the need for all parties involved to navigate these complexities efficiently. This situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, essential components for maintaining public trust in Fiji’s electoral processes.

As the political landscape evolves, there is hope that through open dialogue and collaboration, these challenges can lead to constructive outcomes that ultimately enhance the integrity of Fiji’s democratic framework. The ongoing discussions between political entities reflect a commitment to uphold democratic principles, which bodes well for a more robust governance structure in the future.
