Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet has approved the Presidential Pensions (Amendment) Bill 2024 for presentation in Parliament. According to Rabuka, this Bill seeks to modify the Presidential Pensions Act of 1994 to adjust the President’s term from five years to three years, in accordance with the specifications of the 2013 Constitution.

The Presidential Pensions Act of 1994 serves as the legislative foundation for the pensions and benefits granted to former Governors-General and Presidents of Fiji.

This amendment reflects a significant step toward ensuring that the presidential term aligns with constitutional provisions, emphasizing a commitment to uphold constitutional governance. This move could also enable a more dynamic political landscape in Fiji, allowing for more frequent leadership transitions and potentially fostering greater responsiveness to the needs of the electorate.

Overall, these proposed changes bring a fresh perspective to governance and highlight the government’s dedication to transparency and alignment with constitutional standards.
