Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the 2026 General Election, contingent on the party’s desire for his candidacy. He stated, “I will be available. It depends on the party; if the party wants me to stand, I will.”
Rabuka, a founding member of the PAP since its establishment in 2021, has played a significant role in the party’s rise, contributing to its victory in the general election of December 2022, which was secured by a narrow margin. He emphasized his commitment, noting, “I have done everything for the party for these past three years. But I will not desert the party.” He also mentioned that if the party believes another candidate might better serve their interests, he would be willing to step aside.
Reflecting on the party’s recent voter appeal, Rabuka suggested that it might be challenging for a different candidate to take over leadership ahead of the next election. He acknowledged that while the party has its current voting strength, any changes in leadership will ultimately depend on the voters of Fiji.
In the 2022 General Election, Rabuka garnered the most votes for the PAP, totaling 77,748, followed by Lynda Tabuya with 11,965 votes and Charan Jeath Singh with 5,616 votes.
This year presents a pivotal moment for Rabuka and the coalition, as there seems to be a shift in public sentiment from optimism to a growing sense of hopelessness regarding the coalition’s prospects.
In conclusion, the PAP faces a critical juncture as it prepares for future elections. Rabuka’s openness to a leadership role, coupled with the party’s voting strength, may offer them a chance to regroup and regain public confidence. The emphasis on party unity and willingness to adapt could serve as a foundation for overcoming current challenges.
