Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s decision. He emphasized his commitment to the party, stating, “I will be available. It depends on the party; if the party wants me to stand, I will.”
Rabuka has been integral to the PAP since its formation in 2021, playing a significant role in shaping the party and contributing to its narrow victory in the December 2022 election. He acknowledged that if the party opts for new leadership, he understands and is prepared to step aside. “If they think someone else can do the job better, then I will step aside,” he remarked, showing his dedication to the party’s future.
Noting the challenges ahead, Rabuka pointed out that transitioning leadership could be difficult, given his and Lynda Tabuya’s significant support during the last election. He secured the largest number of votes for the PAP in 2022, with 77,748 votes, while Tabuya followed with 11,965 votes.
As 2023 unfolds, Rabuka reflects on a changing public sentiment toward the coalition, from enthusiasm to a growing sense of uncertainty. Despite this, he remains hopeful about the party’s potential, emphasizing the importance of voter engagement leading into the next election.
This situation presents a compelling moment for change and potential renewal within the People’s Alliance Party. As Rabuka contemplates his future in the party, there is an opportunity for fresh leadership ideas to emerge, which may invigorate the party ahead of the 2026 elections. The evolving political landscape can foster a stronger connection with the electorate, opening pathways for a hopeful future.
