Rabuka’s 2026 Election Bid: What Lies Ahead for Fiji’s Leadership?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to run in the 2026 General Election. This announcement comes despite his recent advocacy for increased youth and women representation within his political party during a meeting held in Lautoka. When confronted about the possibility of standing for election again, Mr. Rabuka responded affirmatively, stating, “Yes, I will.”

His declaration concludes ongoing speculation regarding a potential snap election that had circulated within party circles. The Prime Minister’s leadership has faced scrutiny following the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), especially since she is currently under investigation by the same agency.

Malimali’s appointment has raised questions as it coincided with the period when Finance Minister Biman Prasad was expected to face charges from FICAC. While the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) is responsible for appointing the FICAC Commissioner, observers anticipated the Prime Minister would take action amid the unfolding situation.

Minister Prasad’s case has been suspended pending a review by the new commissioner. Political leaders have urged the Prime Minister to initiate an inquiry into the appointment, claiming it undermines the independence of the anti-corruption body. The Prime Minister has not yet provided any updates regarding this concern. Meanwhile, Malimali’s case has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and is currently with the Criminal Investigations Department.

In related news, Prime Minister Rabuka recently clarified that the coalition Government is set to choose a nominee for the presidency shortly. Although he previously suggested that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere would be suitable for another term, this idea faced opposition during a recent People’s Alliance gathering in Lautoka. In an interview, Mr. Rabuka confirmed that discussions regarding a nominee will take place soon, as President Ratu Wiliame’s first term is set to conclude in November.
