Rabuka’s 2026 Election Bid Sparks Political Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to run in the 2026 General Election. This confirmation comes amidst his recent advocacy for increased youth and women representation within his political party at a meeting held in Lautoka.

When questioned about his plans for the upcoming election, Mr. Rabuka replied positively, stating, “Yes, I will.” His declaration also dispels recent rumors regarding a possible snap election circulating within party circles.

His leadership has faced scrutiny following the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), while she is under investigation by the same agency. This appointment has raised concerns, particularly since it occurred at a time when Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, was expected to be charged by FICAC.

Although the appointment of the FICAC commissioner is the responsibility of the Judicial Services Commission, many expected the Prime Minister to intervene amid the unfolding complications. Currently, Mr. Prasad’s case is on hold pending a review by the new commissioner.

Various political party leaders have urged Prime Minister Rabuka to take action and initiate an inquiry into the commissioner’s appointment, labeling it a violation of the anti-corruption body’s independence. The Prime Minister has not yet provided an update on this situation. Meanwhile, Ms. Malimali’s case has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and is now with the Criminal Investigations Department.

In related news, Prime Minister Rabuka has indicated that the coalition Government will soon discuss a nominee for the presidency. While he previously suggested that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere would be suitable for another term, this was met with opposition at the People’s Alliance assembly held in Lautoka two weeks ago. Mr. Rabuka confirmed that the Government will convene to deliberate on the nomination as Ratu Wiliame’s first term concludes this November.
