Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently contemplating whether to step down following a High Court ruling that deemed the dismissal of former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali unlawful.

After a recent Cabinet meeting, Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya provided an update to the media, stating that the Prime Minister has requested several days to deliberate on his options, including the potential of resignation as he assesses the implications of the court’s findings.

Tabuya emphasized that Cabinet members expressed a strong desire for the Prime Minister to remain in his position. She underscored that the Cabinet is dedicated to upholding the rule of law and respecting both court and Judicial Services Commission (JSC) processes, as the Prime Minister’s political future faces intense scrutiny.

The court clarified that it could not order the reinstatement of Barbara Malimali, leaving decisions regarding damages to the JSC. Consequently, any recommendations regarding the appointment or dismissal of the FICAC Commissioner will now lie in the hands of the JSC, which is expected to convene and make future decisions regarding Malimali.

This ongoing situation highlights the complex interplay between legal rulings and political leadership, showcasing the importance of adherence to judicial processes in governance. As the Cabinet remains united in support of the Prime Minister, there remains a hopeful sentiment that a resolution will soon be reached, allowing for stability and continuity in leadership.
