Rabuka Weighs In on Maharaj’s De-registration Appeal Concerns

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has encouraged Independent Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj to address the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding the challenges he is facing in his appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This call comes in light of Maharaj’s recent criticisms aimed at the COC concerning the delays in appointing a new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Rabuka pointed out that the COC includes two representatives from the Opposition, including Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu, to whom Maharaj can express his concerns. He emphasized that there are two separate issues at play: the COC’s appointment process and the appeal currently under the jurisdiction of the Fijian Elections Office.

Maharaj has labeled the COC’s inaction as “slack,” particularly highlighting the extended vacancy left by Barbara Malimali’s resignation last September. He asserts that the COC is aware of the appeal process yet has failed to fill the commissioner position.

The appeal stems from a complaint by former FijiFirst member Mosese Bulitavu, alleging that the party violated its constitution, which has raised questions about the regulatory framework governing political parties in Fiji. The next hearing related to Maharaj’s appeal is scheduled for August 15, intensifying the anticipation surrounding its outcome.

This situation highlights ongoing complexities within Fijian politics and emphasizes the importance of transparency and efficiency in the electoral process. As the parties involved navigate these challenges, there is hope that resolution will enhance public trust and allow for a more robust governance structure in Fiji.

Above all, it is vital that all stakeholders maintain open lines of communication to ensure fair outcomes that uphold the principles of Fiji’s democratic system.
