Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged the Fijian population to come together in the ongoing battle against violence directed at women and girls. In a recent video shared on his social media, he encouraged citizens to don black attire on Thursdays to demonstrate their solidarity with this crucial cause.
“I’m wearing my black safari suit today, along with the pin that the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection has asked us to wear. This is our statement against violence, rape, and abuse towards women,” Mr. Rabuka announced. He emphasized the importance of embracing this initiative, not just on Thursdays, but as a continuous commitment to combating violence against women every day.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of supporting various social initiatives throughout the year. He drew attention to the Pinktober campaign, dedicated to cancer survivors, reminding Fijians that awareness and support should not be limited to a single month, but instead, should be a year-round commitment.
Additionally, Mr. Rabuka paid tribute to the sacrifices made by soldiers serving in peacekeeping missions. With the anticipated return of these soldiers, he encouraged Fijians to honor their commitment and remember the hardships they faced, including time away from family and the ultimate sacrifice of some who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
His call for unity and ongoing support underscores the need for collective action in addressing violence and supporting those who serve, fostering a culture of respect and remembrance in society.
