Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Fijians to foster unity, faith, and shared responsibility as the nation approaches 2026. In his New Year message, he reflected on the importance of gratitude, humility, and the resilience of the Fijian people, encouraging citizens to remain steadfast in their beliefs.
Rabuka expressed appreciation for the patience and support of the populace while the government works on rebuilding and reforming the country. He emphasized the fragility of peace, noting the rapidly evolving security situation worldwide and the increasing number of global conflicts. In light of this, the Ministry of Defense is currently reevaluating Fiji’s peacekeeping strategy.
Acknowledging the challenges that come with renewal, Rabuka commended the Fijians for their unwavering commitment to a shared future. He reassured them that the government is dedicated to listening to the voices of its people.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the 165 members of the 1st Battalion, Fiji Infantry Regiment, who recently returned from UN peacekeeping operations in Iraq, commending their professionalism and sacrifices that contributed to safer communities abroad and upheld Fiji’s esteemed peacekeeping legacy. He also offered prayers for those currently serving overseas and highlighted plans to redeploy returning peacekeepers to support the Fiji Police Force.
This strategic redeployment aims to enhance national capacity and improve discipline and rapid response while fostering public confidence in law enforcement without leaning towards militarization. Rabuka reaffirmed the significance of national unity, emphasizing that collaboration among government, traditional structures, and civil society is crucial for long-term peace. He concluded by pointing out that addressing poverty is vital for sustaining stability and harmony within the nation.
As Fiji steps into this new year, Rabuka’s message encapsulates a hopeful vision for a united and resilient future.
