Rabuka Urges Fiji to Light the Way to Unity This Diwali

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has encouraged Fijians to exemplify the essence of Diwali by fostering light, compassion, and unity within their communities. In his 2025 Diwali message, he extended warm greetings to “our Hindu brothers and sisters and indeed to every Fijian who embraces this sacred occasion of light, love, and togetherness.”

Rabuka highlighted the significance of Diwali, which commemorates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya—a journey symbolizing righteousness, endurance, and the victory of light over darkness. He noted that as the people of Ayodhya lit lamps to welcome Lord Rama back, it represented truth conquering deception and hope overcoming despair. “As we celebrated Fiji Day just days ago, we reiterated our shared purpose—to build a united and prosperous nation,” he stated. “Diwali calls us to nurture the light within us—the light of truth, compassion, and justice.”

Acknowledging the challenges facing Fiji, such as rising drug use and ongoing social divisions, the Prime Minister said, “Even a flicker of light can break through darkness.” He reminded Fijians that each individual holds the power to illuminate a path forward. The Prime Minister emphasized that the values reflected in his government’s vision of “Ocean of Peace”—peace, unity, forgiveness, and inclusive progress—are mirrored in the true meaning of Diwali.

“This festival is not merely an occasion of lights; it is a call to action: to heal where there is pain, to engage in dialogue where there is stubbornness, and to unite where there is division,” he asserted. He urged citizens to confront personal darkness stemming from selfishness and resentment while welcoming understanding and kindness.

Rabuka also highlighted the importance of community involvement in Fiji’s reconciliation and constitutional review processes, stating, “To those who have experienced injustices due to our past political turmoil—your stories matter.” He urged all citizens to participate in the Constitutional Review Commission, advocating that the process be guided by light and courage rather than fear or blame.

He concluded his message by calling for unity and instilling hope in all Fijians. “Let us ensure that good prevails over evil. Let us be the light that binds our islands with love, justice, and unity,” he encouraged. The Prime Minister expressed his aspirations for a future where all Fijians thrive together, grounded in dignity, equality, and faith that Fiji’s best days lie ahead.

“Happy Diwali to all,” he said. “May this festival bring light into your lives, and may God bless our beloved Fiji.”

This hopeful and unifying message echoes across Fiji’s diverse society, calling citizens to celebrate the festival’s core values by embracing kindness and solidarity, ultimately fostering a stronger and more harmonious community.
