Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Independent Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj to formally reach out to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding the challenges he is facing in his appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This appeal arises amid criticisms directed at the COC for its slow progress in appointing a new chairperson for the Electoral Commission, which has been vacant since Barbara Malimali resigned last September.

In a conversation with FijiLive, Rabuka noted that the COC has two representatives from the Opposition, including Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu, suggesting that Maharaj could bring his concerns to their attention. He emphasized that the issues at hand are distinct: while the COC is responsible for appointing the new chairperson, the Fijian Elections Office is currently processing Maharaj’s appeal.

Maharaj has described the COC’s delay as “slack,” asserting that they have not acted upon the established appeal process despite being aware of it. The appeal follows a complaint initiated by former FijiFirst member Mosese Bulitavu, who alleged that the party had violated its constitutional rules.

The upcoming hearing for this sensitive appeal is scheduled for August 15, highlighting the urgency for all parties involved to address the matter effectively. As the situation unfolds, it emphasizes the complexity of political regulation in Fiji and the importance of maintaining open channels of communication among political bodies.

This incident serves as a reminder of the value of transparency and accountability in governance. The hope is that the resolution of these issues will lead to a strengthened democratic process in Fiji, fostering greater trust among the electorate and improving the overall electoral landscape.
