Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a Cabinet reshuffle aimed at boosting service delivery and ensuring the coalition government performs effectively during the critical final year of its term. At a press conference held this afternoon, Rabuka emphasized that the reshuffle is not based on performance evaluations of individual ministers but rather a reassessment of how portfolios are distributed.
This marks the third reshuffling of the government’s Cabinet in its three-year tenure, with Rabuka stating that such changes are essential given the substantial national priorities that lie ahead. He emphasized the need for improved performance in dealing with significant issues including constitutional and electoral reforms, as well as finalizing recommendations from the truth commission.
As part of the reshuffle, agriculture-related sectors, including the sugar industry, will be consolidated under the Ministry of Agriculture. Rabuka indicated that this streamlining is designed to enhance coordination and the implementation of policies within these key areas.
It was noted that two ministers affected by the reshuffle were not initially informed due to being on unofficial duties outside Suva at the time. However, Rabuka clarified that this matter has now been resolved.
The changes from the Cabinet reshuffle will take effect on January 19. This strategic move is anticipated to foster a more efficient government response to upcoming challenges, and it reflects a proactive approach as the administration navigates its concluding year in office.
