Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that he will take over the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force effective December 1, 2024. This decision follows the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration’s request to temporarily step aside due to ongoing investigations within the Department of Immigration. Rabuka cited his authority under Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji for this reassignment.
Despite these changes, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will retain his position as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. Mr. Mason Smith will continue to serve as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs, ensuring continuity in leadership within that sector.
This transition in leadership offers an opportunity for renewed focus on both immigration and policing in Fiji, which could lead to improved governance and accountability in these vital areas. As the Prime Minister assumes responsibility, it is hoped that efforts to address any existing issues within these departments will result in positive reforms and enhanced public trust in the authorities.
In summary, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s new leadership over the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force is aimed at addressing current challenges and fostering better governance while maintaining the integrity of the Minister for Defence.
