Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will take over the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force, effective December 1, 2024. This announcement was made in a recent statement by Mr. Rabuka.
In his statement, Rabuka explained that following deliberations regarding the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration’s decision to temporarily step aside amid ongoing investigations within the Department of Immigration, he has exercised his constitutional authority under Section 92(3) of the Republic of Fiji’s Constitution to reassign both agencies to his direct oversight.
Despite the changes, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will maintain his role as Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to be supported by Mr. Mason Smith, who remains the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
This reassignment reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency within its ranks, particularly in light of ongoing investigations. It may also signal a move to streamline operations within these critical departments to enhance their effectiveness.
As the government navigates these challenges, there’s hope for a renewed focus on safety and security within Fiji, demonstrating a proactive approach to governance.
