Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that starting December 1, 2024, he will take over the responsibilities of the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force. This decision was made following a careful assessment and in response to the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration’s request to step aside due to ongoing investigations within the Department of Immigration.
Mr. Rabuka cited his constitutional authority under Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji as the basis for this reassignment. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability as these departments undergo scrutiny. Meanwhile, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will continue in his role as Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs, with Mr. Mason Smith supporting him as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
This strategic shift in oversight may foster a renewed focus on improving the integrity of the implicated departments while maintaining the defense sector’s stability.
In these challenging times, it is encouraging to see leadership taking decisive action to address concerns, aiming for a more transparent and accountable governance framework. This move could ultimately strengthen public trust and set a positive precedent for future management in critical national departments.
