Starting December 1, 2024, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will take over the responsibilities of the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force. This decision follows a recent offer from the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration to temporarily step down amid ongoing investigations within the department.
In his statement, Prime Minister Rabuka explained that he had made this reassignment in accordance with the constitutional powers granted to him. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that these vital sectors are overseen properly during this challenging period.
Despite the changes in portfolio, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will continue his role as Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs, with Mr. Mason Smith remaining as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
This transition suggests a proactive approach to governance in addressing issues within the Department of Immigration while maintaining stability in other areas of the government’s operations.
Looking ahead, this reassignment could lead to improvements in both immigration processes and law enforcement in Fiji, promising a well-organized effort to restore public confidence in these critical institutions.
