Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made a significant restructuring decision by placing the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force directly under his authority. This move comes after Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua offered to step aside temporarily, amid ongoing investigations within the Department of Immigration. Rabuka’s decision is backed by his constitutional powers under Section 92(3) of the Republic of Fiji’s Constitution.

Despite this reassignment, Tikoduadua will maintain his role as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to receive support from Mason Smith, who remains the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs. The changes are set to take effect immediately.

This reassignment can be seen as a proactive measure to ensure stability and integrity within the nation’s key agencies during a time of scrutiny. It reflects the government’s commitment to addressing issues transparently while maintaining essential operations within the country.

In a broader context, these changes could lead to a more streamlined approach in handling immigration and policing, ultimately fostering greater trust and efficacy in the departments involved. The engagement of experienced personnel in defense matters also shows a continued focus on national security in the midst of challenges.
