Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will take over the responsibilities for the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force starting on December 1, 2024. This decision was communicated in a recent statement from Mr. Rabuka. He indicated that he made this choice after careful consideration of the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration’s request to step aside temporarily, due to ongoing investigations within the Department of Immigration. The reassignment comes under the authority granted to him by Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.
Despite this shift, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will maintain his position as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to be supported by Mr. Mason Smith, who will remain the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
This reorganization of responsibilities could potentially lead to a more streamlined approach to oversight during the investigations, allowing for a transparent and accountable process as Fiji navigates these challenges. It also demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring that critical departments continue to function effectively amid scrutiny.
Overall, this adjustment provides an opportunity for leadership stability while reinforcing the importance of integrity within Fiji’s government institutions.
