Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his belief that the death penalty is not a viable solution to the ongoing drug issues, despite suggestions that it could serve as a deterrent. He highlighted concerns about the irreversible nature of the death penalty, noting that there have been instances worldwide where new evidence has emerged years after an execution that could have altered the outcome.
“We must be cautious and think about the broader implications of such irreversible decisions,” Rabuka stated.
The discussion has intensified following comments made by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection, who advocated for death sentences for drug traffickers. In response, various politicians, religious leaders, and human rights activists have urged Rabuka to dismiss Tabuya or take disciplinary actions against her for her remarks.
When questioned about the situation, Rabuka mentioned that he had yet to meet with Tabuya regarding the issue and is awaiting a formal complaint to address it.
