Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reiterated his commitment to transparency and the truth, as his government embarks on a review of the laws governing the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Rabuka emphasized that any amendments to these laws will adhere strictly to constitutional processes, ensuring that there are no shortcuts or political interference in the process.

His comments come in response to recent criticisms following the arrest of former journalist Charlie Charters, which has raised questions about the independence of FICAC. Rabuka stated firmly, “There will be no interference from my end,” reinforcing his belief in maintaining the integrity of the judicial process.

The High Court of Fiji recently clarified that any disciplinary actions or removal procedures concerning the FICAC Commissioner fall under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Services Commission, in line with constitutionally outlined procedures. This ruling highlights the importance of due process in any potential changes to FICAC’s operations.

Additionally, Rabuka addressed the need for a whistleblower protection law in Fiji, noting that any future legislation should prioritize credibility and factual accuracy. He stated, “It depends on whether the whistleblower is genuine, and the facts they raise are factual.” His stance supports the notion that protecting whistleblowers is essential to upholding the truth.

During a media briefing, Prime Minister Rabuka also confirmed that the Cabinet is actively considering legislative modifications to the 2018 FICAC Act. However, he cautioned that any amendments to constitutional references would require a referendum, ensuring that the process remains democratic and respects the will of the people.

This approach reflects Rabuka’s commitment to strengthening governance in Fiji, promoting integrity, and ensuring accountability within public institutions. As the government moves forward, it aims to create a more transparent framework that encourages honest reporting and protects those who expose wrongdoing.
