Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a significant reshuffle in the administration, bringing the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force under his direct portfolio. This decision follows the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration’s proposal to temporarily resign amid ongoing investigations within the Immigration Department. Rabuka’s authority to make this change is grounded in Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.
Despite this shift, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will maintain his role as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. Mr. Mason Smith will continue in his position as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs, ensuring stability during this transition.
The reorganization is set to take effect on 1 December 2024, reflecting the government’s commitment to uphold integrity and accountability within its ranks.
This move can be seen as a proactive stance by Prime Minister Rabuka to address critical issues within the immigration system while maintaining the necessary support for national defense. As the country navigates through these changes, there is hope for a more streamlined approach in governance, fostering both transparency and trust among the citizens.
