Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made the swift decision to relieve Jese Saukuru of his duties as Minister for Youth and Sports, effective immediately. In a move to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation into serious allegations of abuse of office connected to the Fiji Sports Council, Rabuka has taken over the Youth and Sports portfolio himself. Assistant Minister Aliki Bia will remain to assist with the everyday management of the ministry.
Rabuka emphasized that the decision to dismiss Saukuru aims to facilitate a thorough investigation by the Fiji Police Force, free from any potential interference. He underscored the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and respect for due process, stating that allegations involving the misuse of public resources are taken with the utmost seriousness.
In addition to Saukuru’s dismissal, the Prime Minister has instructed the board of the Fiji Sports Council to suspend its Chief Executive Officer, Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure. This suspension is intended to allow an independent investigation into the alleged misuse of funds to proceed without hindrance.
Rabuka assured the public that decisions regarding future appointments and any further action will be based on the findings of the investigation. He also conveyed his determination to maintain the continuity of youth and sports programs during this period of inquiry, reinforcing the government’s focus on the development and support of these critical areas. The Prime Minister’s actions reflect a proactive approach to governance, aiming to uphold the principles of responsibility and proper conduct in public office.
