Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a significant restructuring of responsibilities within the Fijian government, specifically by transferring the oversight of the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force under his direct portfolio. This decision comes after discussions with the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, who has offered to temporarily step down due to ongoing investigations within the department. Rabuka is exercising his authority in accordance with Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.
Despite the changes in portfolio, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will retain his position as the Minister for Defence. He will continue to oversee the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs, with support from Permanent Secretary Mason Smith, who remains in his role.
These adjustments will officially take effect on Sunday, December 1, 2024.
This development could be interpreted as a step towards greater accountability and transparency in the Fijian government, particularly concerning critical areas such as immigration and public safety. The Prime Minister’s proactive measures may foster public confidence as investigations progress, ensuring that national security frameworks are not compromised.
