Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to run in the 2026 General Election. This confirmation comes despite his recent advocacy for greater youth and women representation within his political party at a meeting in Lautoka. When questioned about his potential candidacy, Mr. Rabuka responded decisively, stating, “Yes, I will,” alleviating concerns about rumors of an imminent snap election within party circles.

Mr. Rabuka has faced scrutiny following the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), especially since she is currently under investigation by the same agency. Her appointment raises further questions as it coincided with Minister of Finance Biman Prasad’s impending charges from FICAC. While the Judicial Services Commission is responsible for appointing the FICAC commissioner, there is a strong expectation for the Prime Minister to act when issues arise, particularly concerning the integrity of the corruption watchdog.

Mr. Prasad’s case is currently on hold as it awaits review by the new commissioner. Political leaders have urged Mr. Rabuka to take action and initiate an inquiry into the appointment, claiming it undermines the independence of FICAC. The Prime Minister has yet to comment on this ongoing situation.

On another note, Mr. Rabuka indicated that the coalition Government would soon choose a nominee for the presidential role. He previously suggested that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere would be considered for another term, although this view faced opposition during a recent assembly of the People’s Alliance in Lautoka. In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka confirmed plans for the Government to convene and discuss the presidential nomination, as Ratu Wiliame’s first term concludes this November.
