Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is undertaking a two-day inspection of the Northern Division to evaluate proposed upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, the Prime Minister’s visit centers around a significant initiative funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
With a budget estimated at FJD $300 million, this road upgrade project is poised to play a vital role in enhancing infrastructure in Fiji, particularly on Vanua Levu. During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the importance of engaging local communities to ensure that the road improvements not only facilitate better connectivity but also create employment opportunities throughout the construction process.
Among the key areas inspected were 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road, connecting Bua to Nasolo, and a 35-kilometer stretch from Nabalebale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast Road. Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, provided crucial insights into the technical and logistical components of the project, highlighting the collaborative efforts required for successful implementation.
The delegation also participated in a briefing led by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, which showcased the region’s economic prospects that are expected to thrive thanks to the upgraded road infrastructure. Ambassador Lee expressed his satisfaction with the initiative, noting its potential to strengthen regional infrastructure and foster growth across vital sectors like tourism and renewable energy projects, particularly hydropower. The enhanced roadways will also improve access for rural communities, promoting greater connectivity.
