Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently engaged in a two-day visit to the Northern Division to evaluate the planned road improvements under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This important initiative is supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) from the People’s Republic of China. The Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project has an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, marking it as a significant component of China’s BRI efforts in Fiji.

During the tour, Rabuka emphasized the necessity of incorporating feedback from local communities to ensure that the road construction not only enhances connectivity but also creates job opportunities for locals throughout the project’s duration. The delegation inspected crucial areas, including a 15-kilometer stretch of Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and a 35-kilometer segment of Wailevu West Coast Road (from Nabalebale to Dogoru).

Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the Prime Minister, providing insights into the project’s technical and logistical framework. Additionally, the team participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau. This meeting highlighted the region’s economic prospects likely to benefit from enhanced road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, noting its vital role in bolstering infrastructure and fostering regional development. He remarked that the upgraded roads are anticipated to enhance critical sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydropower, while improving access and connectivity for rural areas.

This development initiative promises not only to improve infrastructure but also to create lasting economic benefits for local communities, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable growth.

In summary, Prime Minister Rabuka’s visit underscores the importance of collaboration and local input in infrastructure projects, with the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project set to play a pivotal role in improving connectivity and economic opportunities in Fiji. This initiative could pave the way for a brighter future for many residents by fostering growth in key economic sectors.
