The opposition has criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, accusing him of engaging in political theatrics and attempting to shift blame after he implied he might resign if the appeal regarding the unlawful dismissal of former FICAC commissioner Barbara Malimali does not succeed. Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu characterized the Prime Minister’s remarks as a “calculated attempt” to garner sympathy for the turmoil he has orchestrated.

Seruiratu described Rabuka’s suggestion of resignation as a “hollow gesture,” asserting that the Prime Minister was aware that Parliament might be dissolved before any appeal could take place. He emphasized that the situation created by Rabuka should not be treated as a spectacle for the citizens of Fiji, asserting that the responsibility for the ongoing chaos lies squarely with the Prime Minister.

The opposition’s critique extended further, with MP Premila Kumar questioning the involvement of the Solicitor General in assessing the legal implications of the Commission of Inquiry, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Kumar stated, “Any process dealing with the consequences of the Commission of Inquiry must be clearly independent and free from conflicts of interest.”

In response to the opposition’s concerns, former acting Prime Minister Filimoni Vosarogo clarified that his request for a legal opinion from the Solicitor General did not pertain to reviewing files related to the inquiry handled by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Following a Cabinet meeting, Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya informed the media that the Solicitor General, Ropate Green, would provide counsel to the Prime Minister in light of the recent High Court ruling.

Tabuya mentioned that Mr. Rabuka has been given a few days to contemplate possible directions forward, while also confirming that an appeal remains open. Furthermore, she expressed that Cabinet members stand united in their support for the Prime Minister and would not entertain any resignation from him.

This dynamic between the government and the opposition highlights the tensions within Fijian politics, showcasing a critical moment that may shape future legislative actions and public sentiment across the nation.
