Rabuka Reshuffles Key Portfolios Amid Investigations

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a significant restructuring within the Fijian government, assigning the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force to fall under his direct purview. This decision comes after Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, offered to temporarily step aside due to investigations currently underway within the Department of Immigration. Rabuka made this shift in alignment with the constitutional powers outlined in Section 92(3) of Fiji’s Constitution.

Despite this reassignment, Tikoduadua will retain his role as Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to have the support of Mason Smith, who remains as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.

These changes are set to take effect immediately, emphasizing Rabuka’s commitment to ensuring accountability and effective governance during a crucial time for the nation’s administration.

This restructuring could lead to a more transparent approach in handling matters related to immigration and policing in Fiji. As the government seeks to address ongoing concerns in these sectors, the involvement of the Prime Minister may foster enhanced oversight and improved public confidence in these critical areas of governance.
