Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a significant restructuring of government responsibilities, assigning the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force to his portfolio. This decision comes following thoughtful discussions regarding the current Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, who offered to step down temporarily amid ongoing investigations within the department. Rabuka noted that this move is within his constitutional authority under Section 92(3) of the Republic of Fiji’s Constitution.

Despite these changes, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will retain his role as Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to work alongside Mr. Mason Smith, who serves as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.

These modifications to ministerial duties will take effect starting Sunday, December 1, 2024.

This restructuring demonstrates Rabuka’s commitment to transparency and accountability within government operations. By personally overseeing vital departments during this critical time, he aims to ensure that the investigations proceed smoothly and that public trust is maintained. The Prime Minister’s proactive approach may also pave the way for necessary reforms within the Department of Immigration, ultimately leading to better governance for the citizens of Fiji.

Overall, this decision reflects a positive step toward enhancing the integrity of the public service systems in Fiji.
