Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a significant restructuring within the government by moving the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force under his direct oversight. This decision comes after a thorough assessment triggered by the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration’s voluntary offer to step aside due to ongoing investigations affecting the Department of Immigration. Rabuka is exercising the authority granted to him by Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.
Despite these changes, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua will maintain his role as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to be supported in this role by Mr. Mason Smith, who will remain in his position as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
These adjustments will officially take effect on December 1, 2024, indicating a proactive approach by the government to address current challenges while ensuring that leadership in other critical areas remains stable.
This restructuring reveals a commitment to integrity and accountability within the government. By taking these steps, Prime Minister Rabuka aims to restore public confidence in the institutions under his purview, which could ultimately lead to improved governance and community safety in Fiji.
