Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his belief that the death penalty is not an effective solution to the country’s drug issues, despite suggestions that it could serve as a deterrent. He highlighted the irreversible nature of the death penalty as a major concern, pointing out that there have been instances worldwide where new evidence has come to light long after an execution, potentially changing the outcome.
Rabuka emphasized the importance of considering the wider implications of such irreversible decisions. This discussion gained momentum following comments from Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, who proposed that drug traffickers should be subject to death sentences.
In response to these remarks, various politicians, religious figures, and human rights advocates have urged the Prime Minister to dismiss Tabuya or to take disciplinary measures against her. When asked about the situation, Rabuka stated that he had not yet had a chance to meet with Tabuya to discuss the issue and is currently waiting for a formal complaint.
