Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his readiness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s support. He stated, “I will be available. It depends on the party; if they want me to stand, I will.”
Having been integral to the formation of the PAP in 2021, Rabuka played a pivotal role in shaping its identity and securing a narrow victory in the December 2022 general election. He noted, “If they don’t, I’ve had my run, I’ve had my fingerprints on the party, and they can decide whether they wipe the fingerprints out or continue with a new image, new profile, new leadership, new style.”
Rabuka emphasized his commitment to the party, asserting that he would not abandon it. However, he acknowledged that if the party believed another candidate could lead more effectively, he would be willing to step aside. Given the current political climate, he noted the difficulty of finding a suitable successor, stating, “They have their own numbers now… and if they decide to put it with whoever puts their hand up, there can be hope. But it’s up to Fiji who will be voting.”
During the 2022 General Election, Rabuka garnered the highest number of votes for the PA, amounting to 77,748. In comparison, Lynda Tabuya followed with 11,965 votes, and Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for the Sugar Industry, received 5,616 votes. Rabuka is aware that the coming year is critical as the coalition faces changes in public sentiment that have shifted from optimism to concern.
As the 2026 election approaches, the political landscape will be crucial for both Rabuka and the People’s Alliance Party. The willingness of the party to support its leader could greatly influence the electorate’s confidence moving forward, and could cultivate a renewed sense of hope among their supporters.
This scenario illustrates the importance of unity and leadership within political parties as they approach significant elections. It highlights how leaders can impact public perception and the crucial role of collaborative decision-making in shaping the future direction of a party.
