Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the anticipated 2026 General Election, contingent upon support from the party members. Rabuka, who has been integral to the formation and development of PAP since its inception in 2021, highlighted his role in their narrow victory during the December 2022 general election.
He stated, “If the party wants me to stand, I will,” indicating his readiness to continue if it aligns with the party’s aspirations. Rabuka also noted that he would respect the party’s decision if they prefer to choose new leadership, saying, “I have done everything for the party for these past three years. But I will not desert the party.”
Despite his longstanding commitment, he acknowledged the challenge of transferring leadership, considering the party’s current voter strength and dynamics. Rabuka remains the most popular member of the PAP, receiving 77,748 votes in the last election. Lynda Tabuya and Charan Jeath Singh followed him with significantly lower votes of 11,965 and 5,616, respectively.
This year appears to be pivotal for Rabuka and the coalition, as public sentiment shifts from optimism to concerns over the coalition’s commitment and effectiveness. However, the ongoing dialogue regarding leadership and the party’s direction may help reignite interest and engagement from supporters, offering a chance for revitalization as they prepare for the upcoming election.
In summary, Rabuka’s readiness to lead again—if supported by the party—reflects his dedication and the need for collective decision-making as Fiji navigates its political future. Such transitions often come with both challenges and opportunities, making the upcoming months crucial for the People’s Alliance Party.
This situation presents a hopeful scenario for renewal within the PAP, encouraging active participation and fresh perspectives in the leadership discussions ahead.
