Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s agreement. Rabuka emphasized his commitment, stating, “I will be available. It depends on the party, if the party wants me to stand, I will.”

Having been instrumental in the establishment of the PAP in 2021, Rabuka played a significant role in shaping its identity and strategy, leading to a narrow victory in the last election held in December 2022. He acknowledged that if the party chooses to move in a different direction with new leadership, he would accept their decision, saying, “I have done everything for the party for these past three years. But I will not desert the party.”

Rabuka mentioned that he is currently the party’s top vote-getter, having secured 77,748 votes in the 2022 General Election, far ahead of his closest rival, member of parliament Lynda Tabuya, who received 11,965 votes. He recognized that the party holds a significant voter base, which may make it challenging for others to take over the leadership for the next election.

He noted a shift in public sentiment regarding the coalition, moving from excitement to feelings of uncertainty. However, he remains optimistic, stating that the future hinges on how the voters in Fiji decide to cast their votes.

This moment is crucial for Rabuka and the coalition as they navigate the changing political landscape. His readiness to lead suggests a commitment to the principles and goals of the People’s Alliance, and it remains to be seen how the party will respond as the election approaches.

Overall, while challenges lie ahead for the PAP, Rabuka’s openness to leadership and willingness to prioritize the party’s best interests could foster a sense of unity and direction as they prepare for the 2026 General Election.
