Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s support. He stated, “I will be available. It depends on the party, if the party wants me to stand, I will.”
Rabuka has been integral to the formation and growth of the PAP since its establishment in 2021, playing a pivotal role in shaping its public image and gaining a slim victory in the December 2022 general election. He emphasized his dedication to the party over the past three years, asserting that he will remain loyal to the PAP even if asked to step aside for new leadership. “If they think someone else can do the job better, then I will step aside,” he noted.
He acknowledged the current party dynamics and suggested that leadership changes could be challenging given the existing voter base. Rabuka received the highest number of votes for PAP in the last election, totaling 77,748, with fellow party member Lynda Tabuya following with 11,965 votes.
Amid current challenges, Rabuka highlighted a shift in public sentiment that has transitioned from optimism to concern regarding the coalition’s future. However, he remains hopeful that the party’s established voter base will provide a pathway for the PAP moving forward.
This is a critical year for both Mr. Rabuka and the coalition, as they navigate public expectations and work to restore a sense of optimism among their supporters.
Overall, the resilience and commitment demonstrated by Rabuka to the PAP could serve as a stabilizing force as the party prepares for the upcoming elections, inspiring voters to rally behind a unified leadership.
