Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized that the evaluation of public service should prioritize the welfare of Fiji over familial ties, amid concerns regarding possible nepotism within the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Responding to media inquiries, Mr. Rabuka expressed that discussions should concentrate on the qualifications and contributions of appointees rather than their relationships.

He stated, “No, I am not worried about that; that is a fact of life and politics.” He underscored the significance of the government’s relationship with the Fijian people, noting, “Families do not matter. It is the people as a whole and the nation.”

These remarks followed reports about Acting FICAC Commissioner Lavi Rakoika hiring her niece, the daughter of Fiji Sports Council chief executive Gilbert Vakalalabure, as a lawyer within the commission. Additionally, there have been allegations that her husband, lawyer Tevita Vakalalabure, had access to sensitive case files, raising further questions about conflicts of interest.

The Judicial Services Commission is currently investigating these claims. Mr. Rabuka has indicated that he will no longer directly engage in FICAC-related matters, asserting that any future updates will be issued by the JSC. This approach aims to assure transparency and maintain public trust as the investigation unfolds.

Rabuka’s leadership continues to navigate complex issues, underscoring a commitment to prioritize the nation’s interests above personal connections. This focus may foster a renewed sense of accountability and integrity within Fiji’s public service institutions.
