Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially notified President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere of his recommendation for the upcoming presidential appointment. Ratu Wiliame is currently out of the country for Fiji Day celebrations, with his four-year term concluding on October 21.

In a media statement made yesterday, Mr. Rabuka mentioned he will seek formal approval from the President upon his return. “I am waiting for His Excellency to get back, and I’ll get him to sign the approval. I have recommended it to him via letter. And I will give it to him when he gets back,” he stated.

A special parliamentary session is scheduled for October 31, during which members of Parliament will elect Fiji’s next president. The opposition is also anticipated to propose their candidate for the position.

In related news, nine independent MPs from the opposition, led by Ioane Naivalurua, have expressed their support for Mr. Rabuka’s nomination.
