Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is making a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the planned upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This project is generously funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With a projected budget of FJD $300 million, this project is expected to be a significant milestone for Fiji within the BRI framework.

During the visit, Rabuka stressed the need for local input in the project to ensure that the roadworks not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for residents throughout the construction phase. Key areas inspected included a 15km stretch of Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and a 35km section from Nabalebale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast Road.

Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, joined the Prime Minister during the tour, sharing vital insights into both the technical and logistical aspects of the project. Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu led by Jovesa Naqarikau, which detailed the economic potential of the region that stands to benefit from these infrastructure upgrades.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the initiative, highlighting its importance in enhancing infrastructure and fostering regional growth. He noted that the upgraded roads are expected to significantly enhance key sectors, including tourism and renewable energy projects such as hydropower, while also improving access for rural communities.

This developmental project reflects a promising future for Fiji, potentially transforming its economic landscape and creating more vibrant local opportunities. As the road upgrade efforts progress, they are likely to invigorate the economy and improve the quality of life for many citizens.
