Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has signaled that Sports Minister Jese Saukuru should consider stepping aside as investigations deepen into a travel controversy involving the Fiji Sports Council. The matter revolves around allegations that Saukuru utilized a Fiji Sports Council arrangement with Fiji Airways to arrange travel for his wife to New Zealand.
In response to inquiries, Rabuka affirmed that he had advised Saukuru against interfering with the ongoing investigation. He notably referenced the example set by Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who voluntarily resigned from his position during a similar inquiry last year.
When asked if he was suggesting that Saukuru should take the same approach, Rabuka suggested that it might be the most prudent course of action. “As a mature Member of Parliament, having been in now, going into his second term, hopefully he will realize that that might be the better option for all of us,” he commented, emphasizing the importance of upholding integrity in office.
While Rabuka stopped short of issuing a formal directive for Saukuru to resign, the implications of his remarks are clear. In a previous statement, Saukuru admitted to using the contra arrangement and expressed his willingness to repay the costs involved.
This unfolding situation reflects the broader accountability challenges facing governmental officials, emphasizing the need for transparency and ethical conduct in public service. The Prime Minister’s approach could set a precedent for maintaining integrity within the cabinet, reinforcing public trust in government officials during critical investigations.
