Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed the seamless cooperation between law enforcement agencies as the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) intensifies its efforts against the illicit drug trade. At a press conference, Rabuka emphasized that the RFMF would collaborate closely with the Fiji Police Force, ensuring that the military does not act independently in these operations.
The Prime Minister reassured the public, stating, “They will have to cooperate with the police in the execution of that role, and they understand very well that they can work with the police.” This statement came in response to inquiries about the coordination between the Ministry of Policing and the two forces. Rabuka affirmed that there is a strong collaborative framework both at the ministerial and operational levels.
He noted, “As far as I’m concerned, there is a very clear understanding between the two ministers, and I do not have any doubt that the heads of the operation — the heads of the two arms, the policing arm and the military arm — can cooperate very well.” The Prime Minister highlighted that the cooperation stems from extensive training and professional experiences that the personnel from both forces have undergone.
Additionally, Mr. Rabuka addressed concerns regarding allegations linking some police officers to drug-related activities, urging that such claims should undergo proper reporting and investigation. “They’ll have to be proven. It’s up to those who are making the allegations to make reports, not just make allegations,” he stressed. He called for any reports to be directed to the necessary investigating agencies to ensure that allegations could be properly substantiated or dismissed as mere speculation.
This concerted effort illustrates a committed approach towards tackling drug-related issues in the country, with a focus on unity and professionalism among the national security forces. The proactive stance is expected to enhance public trust and the effectiveness of operations against the drug trade in Fiji.
