Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged rising public concerns regarding his government’s size and performance, identifying internal coalition dynamics and a lack of discipline as barriers to effective governance. In an interview with FBC News, he noted the appointment of only three cabinet members from the G9 coalition to full ministerial roles, while others serve as assistant ministers, highlighting the need for stronger leadership and centralized decision-making.

Rabuka emphasized the challenges of coalition governance, where the interests of individual political parties can sometimes overshadow collective objectives. “There’s been a lot of criticism from Fijians. Some members are prioritizing the interests of their own political parties over the collective good of the government. This needs to change,” he stated. He acknowledged the importance of establishing a firm foundation for making sound decisions and pledged to review the roles and performance of civil servants, indicating that underperforming officials may need to step down or be reassigned.

The Prime Minister’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within his administration as scrutiny mounts over the government’s structure amid calls for accountability and discipline. Rabuka’s plan includes potential reshuffles in response to growing criticisms concerning the effectiveness of current leadership and the government’s size, which has recently expanded to 34 members, including 22 Cabinet Ministers and 12 Assistant Ministers. This expansion has drawn criticism, with opposition figures labeling it a “sham” and expressing concerns over the financial burden on taxpayers already facing economic challenges.

While the situation may appear bleak, there remains a ray of hope that these discussions and criticisms could catalyze necessary reforms. There is potential for greater accountability within leadership, which is essential as Fiji heads towards future elections. Engaging in honest dialogue about governance can pave the way for a more effective and responsive administration that aligns more closely with the needs and expectations of the Fijian populace.

This commitment to improvement and transparency in leadership can ultimately build stronger public trust and foster a better tomorrow for Fiji.
