Rabuka Faces Pivotal AGM as Fiji’s People’s Alliance Shapes 2026 Election Outlook

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also leads the People’s Alliance party, is positioned to address party members today during the annual general meeting (AGM) set to be held at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva. A key agenda item for the meeting will be the confirmation of the party president, among other important discussions.

Speaking to the media ahead of the AGM, Rabuka expressed optimism about the internal support from party members, despite uncertainty regarding the turnout for the meeting. “It’s up to the meeting. I’m open to whatever the AGM comes up with,” he stated, showcasing his readiness to embrace the outcome of the discussions.

The importance of the AGM is underscored by a notice from General Secretary Sila Balawa, which informs financial members that they are required to present official receipts to prove their membership status. This requirement emphasizes the party’s commitment to transparency and structure as it prepares for next year’s crucial general election.

Rabuka’s leadership has seen challenges recently, with some members contemplating the formation of a new political party ahead of the 2026 General Election. However, he reassures supporters of the People’s Alliance party’s strength and unity, emphasizing his commitment to uphold the party’s responsibilities to the Fijian people. In previous statements, he acknowledged the presence of individuals attempting to create division, but remained steadfast in his intent to lead a cohesive party amid opposition.

This AGM is pivotal as it highlights the party’s commitment to democracy and engagement among its members. As the political landscape evolves, the decisions made at this meeting could either fortify the People’s Alliance or set the stage for internal changes as it prepares to face future elections. Rabuka’s open and positive approach toward the AGM reflects a hopeful outlook for the party’s future and its role in Fijian politics.
