Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to participate in the 2026 General Election. His confirmation comes despite his recent advocacy for increased youth and women’s leadership within his political party, which he expressed during a meeting in Lautoka.
When questioned about the possibility of running again in 2026, Mr. Rabuka responded affirmatively, stating, “Yes, I will.” This declaration also addresses ongoing rumors of a potential snap election circulating within party circles.
Mr. Rabuka has faced scrutiny recently following the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), which is notable as she is currently under investigation by the very organization she now leads. Concerns have been raised regarding her appointment coinciding with the anticipated charging of Finance Minister Biman Prasad by FICAC.
Though the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner is managed by the Judicial Services Commission, many believe the Prime Minister should have intervened as issues began to arise. The investigation into Mr. Prasad’s case is currently on hold, awaiting a review by the new commissioner.
Political leaders have urged the Prime Minister to take action and establish an inquiry into the appointment, citing it as a potential infringement on the independence of the corruption commission. The Prime Minister has yet to comment further on this situation.
Additionally, Ms. Malimali’s case has been referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and is now with the Criminal Investigations Department.
In other news, the Prime Minister has indicated that the coalition Government is expected to soon select a nominee for the presidential position. Mr. Rabuka previously suggested that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere was suitable for another term; however, this was contested during the People’s Alliance gathering in Lautoka two weeks ago. In a recent interview, he confirmed that government officials will convene to discuss the nomination process, as Ratu Wiliame’s first term concludes this November.
