Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to run in the 2026 General Election. This confirmation comes despite his recent advocacy for increased youth and women representation within his political party during a meeting in Lautoka. When questioned about his electoral plans, Mr. Rabuka decisively stated, “Yes, I will,” which also puts an end to recent rumors of a possible snap election circulating within party circles.

Mr. Rabuka’s leadership has come under scrutiny following the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), while she herself is under investigation by the agency. The timing of her appointment has raised concerns, especially since Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, is facing potential charges from FICAC.

Although the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) makes the appointment of the FICAC commissioner, there were expectations for the Prime Minister, as the head of government, to intervene in what many considered a problematic situation. Currently, Mr. Prasad’s case is on hold as it awaits a review by the new commissioner.

Political leaders have urged the Prime Minister to conduct an inquiry into the appointment, labeling it as an infringement on the independence of the corruption commission. However, the Prime Minister has yet to comment on the matter, while Ms. Malimali’s case has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and is currently with the Criminal Investigations Department.

In other news, Mr. Rabuka revealed that the coalition government will soon be discussing a nominee for the presidency. He previously indicated that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere was suitable for another term, a sentiment that was contested during a recent meeting of the People’s Alliance in Lautoka. Mr. Rabuka confirmed that discussions regarding the nominee will take place soon, as Ratu Wiliame’s first term concludes this November.
