Rabuka Confirms 2026 Bid Amid Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to run for the 2026 General Election. This confirmation comes despite his recent advocacy for increased representation of youth and women within his political party at a meeting held in Lautoka.

When queried about his plans for the upcoming polls, Mr. Rabuka responded unequivocally, stating, “Yes, I will.” His declaration also addresses recent rumors regarding a possible snap election circulating within party circles.

The Prime Minister’s leadership has faced scrutiny following the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), particularly as she herself is under investigation by the agency. Critics have raised concerns over her appointment coinciding with Minister for Finance Biman Prasad, who was anticipated to be charged by FICAC.

Although the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) is responsible for appointing the FICAC commissioner, many observers expect that the Prime Minister should intervene in light of the escalating situation. Mr. Prasad’s case is currently on hold while it undergoes a review by the new commissioner.

Several political leaders have urged the Prime Minister to conduct an inquiry into the appointment, describing the situation as potentially compromising the independence of the corruption watchdog. Mr. Rabuka has yet to release an update regarding this matter. Meanwhile, Ms. Malimali’s case has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and is now with the Criminal Investigations Department.

In another development, Prime Minister Rabuka stated that the coalition government will soon make a decision on a nominee for the President position. While he previously indicated that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere was suitable for another term, this suggestion met with opposition during a recent gathering of the People’s Alliance in Lautoka. Mr. Rabuka confirmed that discussions on a nominee would take place shortly, as Ratu Wiliame’s first term concludes this November.
