Rabuka Calls for Revolutionary Change to Fiji’s Constitution

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called for a reevaluation of the 2013 Constitution, stating that it contains regressive restrictions on human rights. His comments were made during the National Federation Party Annual Convention held in Sigatoka yesterday.

Rabuka emphasized that although his coalition government could choose to benefit from the clauses that grant them undue advantages, they recognize that doing so would be unjust, unrealistic, and undemocratic. He highlighted the importance of truth and reconciliation for Fiji, urging the nation to heal and move beyond the historical political turmoil and the resulting culture of fear and mistrust. He noted that the trauma from past political conflicts has been internalized for too long, creating intergenerational burdens that should be addressed.

Supporting the idea of establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, National Federation Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad stated that it is essential to engage in open discussions about the traumatic events that have shaped the nation, in order to learn from one another and envision a better future.

The Prime Minister reiterated his personal commitment to the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as part of the effort to create a just and equitable constitution.
