Rabuka Calls for Major Overhaul of Fiji’s 2013 Constitution

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed the need to reassess the 2013 Constitution. Speaking at the National Federation Party Annual Convention in Sigatoka, he criticized the Constitution for its regressive limitations on human rights.

Rabuka acknowledged that although the coalition government could benefit from the existing clauses that provide them with unfair advantages, they recognize that this would be unjust, unrealistic, and undemocratic. He emphasized that healing and reconciliation are essential for Fiji to move past its history of political turmoil and the culture of fear and mistrust that has affected the nation. The Prime Minister noted that for too long, the country has internalized the pain from political conflicts and has not addressed the burdens that could be passed to future generations.

In support of establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, National Federation Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad stated that it is crucial to openly discuss the traumatic events the nation has endured, learn from one another’s experiences, and plan for the future.

Rabuka reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing a just and fair Constitution, emphasizing his personal dedication to the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
