Rabuka Calls for Constitutional Change to Address Human Rights Concerns

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called for a reassessment of the 2013 Constitution. Speaking at the National Federation Party Annual Convention in Sigatoka, he criticized the Constitution for containing restrictive limitations on human rights.

Rabuka acknowledged that as part of a coalition government, there may be a temptation to benefit from the provisions that provide them with disproportionate advantages and power. However, he emphasized that such actions would be unjust and undemocratic.

He pointed out the importance of truth and reconciliation for Fiji, stating it is essential for national healing and to close the painful chapter of political turmoil that has created a lasting culture of fear and mistrust. According to Rabuka, the nation has long endured the trauma from political strife without addressing the lasting impacts it has had across generations.

Prof. Biman Prasad, the NFP Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, reinforced the need for open discussions regarding the nation’s traumatic history, suggesting that this dialogue could facilitate understanding and help establish a path for the future.

The Prime Minister reiterated his personal commitment to the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, aiming for a constitution that is just and fair.
