Participating in the Vodafone Kaji competition represents a significant opportunity for the Under 13 teams from Ra district, as highlighted by coach Varayame Ratu. He emphasized that the primary aim is to gain valuable experience and enhance the skills of their young players.

Despite only having a week’s preparation before the matches began at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, the teams display commendable enthusiasm and resilience, even without access to training shoes. This determination reflects their commitment to competing at the national level.

Teams from various locations, including Drauniivi, Bureiwai, and Bucalevu, have come together in two age groups, Under 13 and Under 14. Coach Ratu noted that their focus is not solely on winning but on nurturing the young athletes’ skills, expressing hope that they will secure wins along the way.

He also highlighted a positive trend in Fijian women’s rugby, mentioning the successes of the Fijiana sevens and fifteens teams, as well as the Fijian Drua women. The development of the girls’ team could serve as an important step in preparing athletes for competitive high school rugby.

The team has been dedicated, engaging in three training sessions daily, which includes a morning devotion. Coach Ratu invited the Ra community in Suva to come out and support their teams, showing that unity and encouragement can enhance team spirit.

This competition is about more than just winning; it showcases the potential of young athletes and the commitment of their coaches to foster a love for the game and personal growth.

In summary, while the Ra teams may not have extensive training resources, their focus on skill development and community support signifies a bright future for these young athletes. The event serves as a platform for growth, not just in rugby, but in building character and resilience.
